Candidates for this year’s Len Evans Tutorial are now invited to apply for the annual program, which will be held in November in the Hunter Valley.

The wine educational tutorial is designed to illustrate the demands of show judging by exposing participants to the great wine styles of the world.

A team of tutors will put the scholars through their paces, with James Halliday, Ian McKenzie, Iain Riggs, Gary Steel and Brian Croser lined up for the job this year.

The tutorial is open to anyone interested, with previous scholars coming from fields as diverse as winemaking, liquor retailing, restaurants, marketing and journalism.

As James Halliday said, the potential of the applicants will determine the panel’s decisions, but experience as an associate judge at regional wine shows will also be an advantage.

There are 12 fully paid scholarships on offer — each covering wine, food and accommodation — valued at around $9000. The only cost incurred by the scholars is travel to the Hunter Valley in NSW.

Applicants for the 2008 Len Evans Tutorial should send their CV with a detailed letter outlining their reasons for wanting to be a Len Evans Scholar. Names and contact details of three industry referees must also be included, and sent here.

Applications close Friday, September 5.
