Melbourne nightclub the Cherry Bar was damaged last night after a fire swept through the first floor of the building.

More than 700 people were evacuated from surrounding restaurants and buildings in what firefighters said was one of the biggest fires they had attended in the city.

The fire is believed to have started on the first floor of the Flinders Lane building, which also houses the offices of chef Jamie Oliver.

A spokesperson for the Metropolitan Fire Brigade said that the bar had received extensive smoke and water damage.

Investigators are currently on scene to determine the cause of the fire.
