Outdoor Smoking Bans in Fremantle Begin

By Rebecca Harris

Smoking will be banned in all outdoor eating areas in City of Fremantle from today (August 15).

The move follows on from the introduction of new laws in February that require at least half of all outdoor eating areas in the city be set aside as non-smoking.

The council’s environmental health and building services coordinator, Matthew Piggott, said it was a positive step toward promoting the health and wellbeing of the community.

“There are public health benefits to be gained from introducing alfresco dining smoking bans,” he said. “[This] has been recognised by the City of Fremantle [and] backed up by a recent City of Perth decision to introduce a similar ban in
Northbridge and the Perth CBD from July 2009.”

Pigget emphasised the ban will apply to all alfresco dining areas located on council land, across all suburbs.

“[The] ban on smoking applies to far more than just the cappuccino strip – it applies across the whole council area,” he said.
