QLD Confronts Schoolies Drinkers With Confronting Ads

By Annette Shailer

The second part of the Queensland Government’s confronting ‘Safer Drinking Cultures’ campaign to curb binge drinking was rolled out in cinemas yesterday (November 6) in time for Schoolies Week.

Entitled ‘Every Drink Counts’, it uses confronting images of young men and women in life-threatening situations as a result of drinking too much alcohol.

The graphic advertisements show youths in pools of vomit, being glassed and raped, and are part of the ongoing $2.6 million Queensland Government’s campaign to encourage safer drinking.

QLD Treasurer and Liquor Licensing minister, Andrew Fraser, said the campaign hopes young people will take notice of the potential consequences of excessive drinking.

“The message is clear – ‘Every Drink Counts’. In one moment of drunken stupidity a punch can be thrown, a glass smashed into someone’s face, or a young person pushed into oncoming traffic,” he said.

“These are the real consequences of binge drinking that we continue to hear about almost every weekend.”

The campaign is targeted at 18 to 25 year-olds and includes online graphics, posters in washrooms, radio and press advertising.
