Sonnel Hospitality has lodged a Development Application (DA) with Liverpool City Council for a massive overhaul of Crossroads Hotel.

After two and a half years of operating the sizeable pub in Sydney’s south-west, Sonnel Hospitality has lodged a DA with Liverpool City Council to expand and overhaul the hotel, asking better use of the 1.28 hectare site the pub sits on.

Sonnel Hospitality, then known as Nelson Meers Group, acquired Crossroads Hotel in early 2022 for a record-breaking $160m off Marlow Hotel Group. It has been operating the popular pub for the most part as is since the acquisition.

But now, the group has lodged extensive expansion and renovation plans for the pub, with an estimated cost of close to $34m.

The plans include the construction of a new elevated three-storey, 39-room short-stay accommodation block, attached to the hotel. It would require partial demolition of the existing building, which houses 15 accommodation rooms.

The existing building would be reconfigured to include a kid’s area, expanded restaurant, cafe, and bistro areas as well as new flexible function spaces, revised rooftop access, and revised car park layout with an additional 16 parking spaces for a total of 232 parking spaces, as well as pick-up and drop-off area for five vehicles. There are also plans for a new external courtyard and outdoor spaces, including a lounge garden and beer garden. There would also be new landscaping and an increase in canopy coverage. The new design plans have been overseen by H&E Architects.

Sitting on a large corner site at the juncture of the Hume Highway, Campbelltown Road and Camden Valley Way, the Crossroads Hotel has always been a popular pub, not only with locals but also as a rest-stop for truck drivers transporting goods up and down the eastern seaboard. The plans would extend the pub’s offer even further.

A spokesperson for Sonnel Hospitality told Australian Hotelier the group planned to elevate Crossroads Hotel for the local community.

“Liverpool is a thriving, fast-growing part of Western Sydney, and the Crossroads Hotel has long been a landmark venue for the area. Our planned redevelopment will elevate it to something the community can be really proud of and take ownership of – somewhere locals can gather for everything from milestone celebrations to casual family dinners. We want to create an environment that truly caters to the needs of this wonderful community.”

The news caps off a busy 12-month period for Sonnel Hospitality, which not only underwent a rebrand, but has focused on elevating and expanding community and entertainment experiences in western Sydney through its pubs. The group acquired two massive western Sydney pubs off Redcape, unveiled a multi-million dollar renovation of the Guildford Hotel, and launched its Her Sport, Her Bar initiative across its portfolio of pubs.
