Growing Melbourne pub group, Ganley Group, has acquired the Windsor Castle Hotel and The Carlton Club, saving them from administration.

The two pubs were placed in voluntary administration at the end of 2024, with owner Tracey Lester citing the long-lasting impacts of the covid pandemic, impacting the business.

Ganley Group’s acquisition ensures both pubs remain open and that dozens of staff remain employed. The Windsor Castle is a traditional corner pub with public bar, a dining room seating 40 pax, a large beer garden and multiple first-floor function rooms.

The Carlton Club is a three-storey venue with multiple offers, including a very popular nightclub, a gastropub-style restaurant, a cocktail lounge and function space, and a rooftop bar overlooking the CBD on Bourke Street.

The purchase of The Windsor Castle’s freehold ensures a long-term investment in both the building and the pub, guaranteeing that it remains a community ‘local’for years to come.

“We are incredibly proud to have stepped in and secured the futures of The Windsor Castle and The Carlton Club,” said Liam Ganley, director of Ganley Group.

“We’re committed to preserving everything that makes these venues so special—timeless, welcoming venues with unbeatable beer gardens that invites long afternoons and late nights filled with friends, good conversation, and a steady flow of pints. And don’t worry—the elephants will remain at The Windsor Castle.”

For now, Ganley Group will operate the Carlton Club as is, taking the time to understand the building’s quirks, charm, and rich history. However the group has noted the Carlton Club’s fantastic outdoor spaces and central location in the heart of the city offer tremendous potential for future development. However, the immediate priority is to steady the ship, introduce new systems and procedures, and build a strong foundation for the venue’s future.

“We firmly believe that Melbourne’s CBD is on the cusp of a remarkable revival,” said Liam Ganley.

“As one of the greatest hospitality cities in the world, Melbourne deserves to have its historic venues preserved and reinvigorated. We are honoured to play a role in this exciting process.”

The Windsor Castle Hotel and Carlton Club join the Ganley Group portfolio, comprising The Bay Hotel Mornington, Freddie Wimpoles, The Fifth Province and Angus and Bon.
