Tumbulgum Tavern in New South Wales’ Northern Rivers region has joined Epochal Hotel’s portfolio of waterfront pubs.
Epochal Hotels has announced the acquisition of the Tumbulgum Tavern, a riverside pub long considered the beating heart of the Northern Rivers.
Set to settle later this year, the purchase is joint venture between Epochal Hotels CEO Glenn Piper and Northern Rivers investor William Nicholson, who together have assembled a syndicate of local backers to safeguard the pub’s future.
“The Tumbulgum Tavern is one of those rare pubs that seems to hold a thousand stories within its walls. Its history, its architecture, its riverfront location – it’s all incredibly special,” stated Piper.
“When a close friend first flagged it was on the market, I was immediately drawn to it. The Northern Rivers is a region I already feel connected to – my family and I spend time here every year after beach volleyball tournaments in nearby Coolangatta – so to now play a role in shaping the future of this pub is a great honour.”
Local partner and co-director William Nicholson added: “The Tavern has always been a true community anchor. By joining forces with Glenn and the Epochal team, we’re ensuring that it not only continues to thrive, but evolves in a way that honours its roots while looking to the future.”
Tumbulgum Tavern has all the hallmark features that have become a signature of the Epochal Hotels portfolio. It’s close to water, located on the banks of the Tweed River; and a deep history within the Northern Rivers region that can be celebrated.

Epochal Hotels plans to make thoughtful enhancements over time, with a focus on elevating service, refining the offering, and creating experiences that reflect the character of Tumbulgum and the broader region.
Piper continued: “We want to build on what locals already love, while inspiring visitors from further afield to discover why the Tavern means so much to this community.”
The Tumbulgum Tavern joins Epochal’s expanding portfolio of landmark pubs, including Harbord Hotel in Freshwater and Beach Hotel in Merewether. Its most recent acquisition was the Bermgui Beach Hotel on the South Coast.
Next month, the group will also reopen The Commodore Hotel in McMahons Point following an inspired restoration, bringing new life to another Sydney icon.
Plans for the Tumbulgum Tavern will be announced in due course.
