Independent MP for Kooyong Dr Monique Ryan has thrown her support behind calls for an indefinite freeze on the beer tax, a move welcomed by the Australian Hotels Association (AHA).
Her backing comes after the Albanese Government announced a temporary two-year pause on beer tax increases, aimed at giving drinkers and venues some relief amid ongoing cost-of-living pressures.
AHA CEO Stephen Ferguson said a proposal by Independent Member for Bradfield Nicolette Boele to extend the freeze to include craft beer is also “worthy of consideration.”
“As is today’s announcement from the Nationals to extend the draught beer freeze indefinitely and include tap spirits,” Ferguson said.
“It’s good to see independents now getting on board with common sense measures to help both business and draught beer drinkers alike.
“This is an important issue for voters and we thank the Prime Minister for leading the way with his two-year draught beer freeze.
“Dr Monique Ryan, Nicolette Boele and the Nationals should be congratulated for their practical suggestions which will help bring cost of living relief to consumers.”
