ALH has almost completed the first phase of renovations at Brisbane’s Breakfast Creek Hotel, including an update to the historic Spanish Garden Steakhouse.

The $2.75m transformation is only the first phase of the revitalisation project, which will be undertaken over the next few years.

Phase 1, due to be completed this month, will see a complete renewal of the Spanish Garden Steakhouse as well as the introduction of a brand-new pizza kitchen, integrated with the venue’s heritage architecture.

ALH managing director Paul Carew said the intention behind the update is to honour the pub’s rich legacy and all the milestone moments that have happened within its walls, while reimagining its future.

“This is more than just a facelift. We’ve channelled the pioneering spirit that defines the Breakfast Creek into vibrant, contemporary spaces that set the tone for modern pub culture,” Carew said.

“This is one of the most iconic pubs in Queensland, if not Australia. It’s important that we continue to honour its legacy, while also ensuring a best-in-class hospitality experience for everyone that comes through the doors.”

The transformation has been brought to life by Cayas & Ward Architects and Herron Coorey Builders.

The renowned Spanish Garden Steakhouse will receive a complete interior design refresh, a new semi-enclosure, expanded capacity, and upgraded air-conditioning in time for summer.

A standout feature will be the dry-age cabinet at the entrance, showcasing a greater selection of dry-aged meats and new premium cuts from local producers like Darling Downs, Nolans, Five Founders, and Black Onyx.

The updated menu will retain k much-loved classics like the Idaho potato and coleslaw, a 60-year venue staple and guest favourite. The Creek will now offer an extensive cocktail selection and expanded wine list, while retaining the 135-year-old tradition of serving XXXX off the wood. The pizza kitchen will take pride of place in the beer garden with a fresh open-air design – adding pizza to the menu at the pub for the first time in its history.

Breakfast Creek Hotel publican Mike Rodgers says the upgrades to the menu, interior design, and overall vibe ensures a diverse offering for everyone.

“This place has always been the people’s pub, it’s where mates catch up and locals feel at home. We are still the same Brekky Creek that every Queenslander knows and loves,” Rodgers stated.

“With summer approaching, we’re stoked to welcome folks back through the doors to experience the updates to the Spanish Garden, as well as the new Pizza Kitchen, for themselves. We’ve got cold beer, cracking food, and a seat in our beer garden with mates. That’s what the Creek’s all about.”

Phase 1 renovations are expected to be complete by the end of the month, with the pub trading throughout.

Further phases will deliver more upgrades to the Breakfast Creek Hotel, including new private event spaces and outdoor dining areas to be revealed in 2026.
