South Australia’s Duxton Pubs has announced the acquisition of the historic Birkenhead Tavern.
The local landmark has been operating on the banks of Adelaide’s Port River for almost 150 years, with the new owners proud to continue the pub’s legacy.
Founded in 2020, Duxton Pubs has become one of South Australia’s largest locally owned and operated hospitality groups with venues such as The Lion Hotel, Cremorne, Old Noarlunga, and Saracen’s Head Hotel in their portfolio.
Affectionately known as ‘The Birk’, the venue offers an all-day dining bistro, gaming and TAB facilities, waterfront views and an all-weather deck which is a great place to spot Port River dolphins while enjoying a meal or drink.

Duxton Pubs will introduce a fresh focus to The Birk, but promises to preserve the historic charm and character of the much-loved venue while maintaining quality service and experience.
Duxton Pubs CEO, Mark Condi, said that the plan is to keep to the status quo.
“We are excited to have Birkenhead Tavern join the Duxton Pubs group. It is an amazing venue in an amazing location,” he said.
“The venue is supported so well by the community, and it’s fantastic to see the restaurant bustling most days. We look forward to continuing our focus on the venue’s success.
With his wealth of hospitality experience, Steve Roberts has been appointed venue manager.
Roberts will work alongside the existing staff to ensure The Birk remains a staple for good food, drinks, and community atmosphere.
Condi said that steps will be taken to ensure a smooth handover.
“Our first priority has been to ensure all the Birkenhead employees are supported through the transition, they are an amazing team. We look forward to a continued focus on the venue and are excited about the future.”
