This weekend brings a first for Australian punters as they will be able to watch heavyweight world champion Anthony Joshua fight on Sunday afternoon.
The heavyweight bonus for venues comes as Joshua makes his boxing debut in the United States, defending his four world titles against American Andy Ruiz Jnr at Madison Square Garden. The time difference means Joshua’s fight is scheduled to start at 12.30pm AEST, great news for venues and Australian fight fans.
The entire card kicks off at 9AM AEST. The card includes popular Irish boxer Katie Taylor who will attempt to unify the Women’s Lightweight Division against WBC Champion Delfine Persoon. Her fight will be around 10AM AEST for those venues opening early.
GM of Content & Partnerships at Foxtel, Japhy Duldig said: “This a great opportunity for licensed venues to show one of the world’s best fighters at a customer friendly time. With the prestige of Joshua in the ring, the event should generate a healthy crowd and boost Sunday lunch trade.
“Also of interest is Irish boxing sensation Katie Taylor who will be looking to unify the women’s lightweight division. This is a huge fight for Irish ex-pats as one of their own looks to become the undisputed champion of the division.”
Joshua is currently the WBA, WBO, IBO and IBF heavyweight champion and he is the undefeated king of the heavyweight division having won 21 of his 22 fights via knockout. Ruiz Jnr should present a tough challenge for Joshua as he enters the Madison Square Garden ring with an impressive 32 wins, one loss record where his only defeat came against former WBO champion Joseph Parker.
Joshua beat Parker for the WBO belt in March last year, the first time the champion went the distance, winning thanks to a unanimous judges decision.
