The Liquor Stores Association of Western Australia (LSA WA) has announced the return of its Sundowner event, to take place later this month.

The first Sundowner was held in November 2020 and was a huge success, being one of few social events the industry could host in the midst of COVID. LSA WA noted that there has been repeated interest as to when the organisation would hold another event of this kind.

Rather than another end of year occasion, the 2023 Sundowner event will be held on the last day of summer, 31 March, at the Perth Flying Squadron Yacht Club by the Swan River. Peter Kapsanis, Media and Government Relations Manager for LSA WA, said it was the perfect timing for the event’s return, especially as it falls away from major trading occasions like Christmas, Australia Day and Easter.

“We were galvanised by the camaraderie and the support for the 70th Anniversary of the association and our awards, [celebrated in October 2022]. We wanted that momentum to continue into 2023, with an opportunity for the industry to get together in a casual and relaxed setting,” Kapsanis said.

“We’re a membership-based organisation, so this is all about adding value for our members, tailoring and customising more services to meet our members needs.”

Like the first Sundowner, this year’s event will raise money for food rescue charity, OzHarvest WA. It’s a great cause – every 50c collected on the night equals one meal for a family in need, and LSA WA hopes to raise enough for thousands of meals on the night.

This year’s Sundowner is supported by Lion and its partnership between XXXX and the Great Barrier Reef Foundation, as well as Containers for Change and WA Energy, with more sponsors to be announced. These organisations will be behind key events, news and activations over the course of the evening. For example, WA Energy will be shedding light on how liquor stores can save on their energy costs by going down the solar energy track.

Another key part of the event will be the unveiling of an innovative toolkit from Containers for Change, aimed at inspiring local liquor stores in WA to encourage recycling, reduce landfill and help save the planet. Details of the toolkit, which a couple of LSA WA member stores are already using, will be made available on the night.

Kapsanis said all of this and more will build on the success of the last Sundowner for a truly memorable occasion for the hundreds of LSA WA members and corporate partners tipped to attend, who will be joined by a host of VIP guests and politicians from all sides.

He revealed one final predicted highlight, and said: “We will have a tequila tasting bar from Hot Torque Tequila, which is actually a brand produced by a former WA chef and Perth local, who has partnered with a family in Mexico and is importing the product. It’s already in some stores and venues in Australia, and we’ll be able to hear more in the weeks ahead.”
