Australia’s liquor retail industry is an incredibly diverse landscape, from pioneering new trends to upholding time-honoured traditions. But beyond the brands and products, it is the individuals within this industry whose passion and dedication create such a dynamic market.
In each instalment of our ‘Five minutes with…’ series, National Liquor News puts the spotlight on a key figure in the industry, sharing a glimpse into their personality and the experiences that underpin their achievements.
Each fortnight, we will dive into the professional accomplishments and unique perspectives of our industry’s dynamic leaders, uncovering their personal stories of success.
This week, we sat down with Kathleen Davies, Founder of Nip of Courage, the leading Australian distributor and exporter of Australian craft spirits.
NLN: How long ago was Nip of Courage founded, and can you share a bit about the journey that led you to start the company?
KD: My interest in the Australian craft distilling movement began around 2010 while working in export within the liquor industry. Observing the rise of craft distilleries in the UK and US, which had been significantly influenced by the craft beer movement, sparked my enthusiasm for a similar trend in Australia.
In early 2013, I founded Nip of Courage with a vision to support and promote Australian craft distilleries. At that time, there were approximately 30 known commercial distilleries and brands across the country, many lacking distributor or wholesaler representation. I quickly immersed myself in the industry, traveling to distilleries in Tasmania, New South Wales, Queensland and Western Australia to build a distributor portfolio.
The landscape has transformed dramatically since then. What once required relentless effort to establish partnerships is now a booming industry with over 700 Australian distilleries. The challenge has shifted to keeping up with demand, as there are now not enough distributors or wholesalers to adequately support the growing number of distilleries.
NLN: What are some of the key milestones or lessons in your career that have shaped your understanding of the industry?
KD: With over 30 years in the liquor industry, several key milestones and lessons have profoundly shaped my career. One of the most important aspects has been cultivating strong, lasting relationships with all key stakeholders—suppliers, distributors, retailers, bartenders, business owners and media. I’ve found that the liquor industry thrives on a highly affiliative network where connections and collaboration play a crucial role in success.
NLN: How do you ensure Nip of Courage stays ahead of industry trends and changes?
KD: In our extensive experience in the liquor industry, staying ahead of trends and changes has been critical. We heavily rely on key trade media sources such as The Shout, Bars and Clubs, and National Liquor News to keep abreast of the latest industry developments. These sources provide valuable insights and updates on emerging trends, regulatory changes, and market shifts.
Additionally, we leverage our own data to explore and refine strategies for brand and category performance. By analysing our internal metrics and combining them with external media insights, we can make informed decisions and adapt our approach to stay competitive and responsive to market demands.
NLN: As the founder of Nip of Courage, what are your ambitions for the year ahead?
KD: Through our research, including direct conversations with the general public in major cities, we discovered that only one in 100 Australian adults can name five Australian distilleries. This insight underscores the need for greater awareness and education about our vibrant and emerging craft distilling industry.
In the year ahead, our goal is to run effective awareness campaigns aimed at boosting visibility and educating a broader audience about Australian craft distilleries. By increasing public knowledge and engagement, we aim to highlight the diversity and quality of our local spirits, fostering a deeper appreciation and support for the industry.
NLN: What keeps you inspired?
KD: I stay inspired by being part of a team, whether it’s working closely with my colleagues at Nip of Courage or collaborating with other industry groups. One of the highlights of my career has been serving on the board of Women of Australian Distilling. This role allows me to work alongside a dedicated team to promote and support women within the industry, fostering greater inclusivity and empowerment.
Being part of these collaborative efforts fuels my passion and drives me to continue contributing to the growth and development of the craft distilling community.
NLN: Outside of work, what hobbies do you have, or how do you enjoy your spare time?
KD: My husband Jarrod and I share our lives with a 36kg Rottweiler lapdog named Betty, who keeps us on our toes with daily bushwalks and her endless funny antics. Betty’s presence adds a lot of joy and laughter to our days.
I hold a degree in Fine Arts and have a passion for painting, drawing, and photography. In my spare time, I also enjoy camping and fishing, and I’m currently diving into the world of fly fishing. These activities not only offer a creative outlet but also allow me to unwind and connect with nature.
