Liquor industry associations have welcomed the announcement of Premier Roger Cook’s new Cabinet team in Western Australia.

The industry has congratulated Premier Cook on the Labor government’s third term, welcoming the cabinet reshuffle, which includes three new members as well as the renewed tenure of Minister Paul Papalia to the Racing and Gaming portfolio.

Australian Hotels Association (AHA) (WA) CEO Bradley Woods expressed confidence in the cabinet and emphasised the importance of collaboration to support growth in the industries.

“We welcome Minister Paul Papalia continuing to oversee Liquor Licensing in the Racing and Gaming portfolio. Minister Papalia has a comprehensive understanding of the issues facing WA’s hotel and hospitality industry and has previously implemented key reforms to the Liquor Control Act,” said Woods.

“Minister Reece Whitby takes on the Tourism portfolio and we look forward to working with him to continue to enhance WA’s position as a world-class tourism destination.”

Woods added that he looks forward to the continued strong working relationship with the ministers to drive initiatives to benefit both Western Australians and visitors to hotels and hospitality venues.

Woods also extended gratitude to outgoing Tourism Minister Rita Saffioti for her dedication and impact in her role.

“Minister Saffioti demonstrated a clear passion for the tourism industry, spearheading initiatives that positioned WA as a leading destination for visitors. Her leadership has been instrumental in achieving record-high occupancy rates for Perth hotels in 2024.”

Liquor Stores Association (LSA) WA CEO Peter Peck and Retail Drinks Australia CEO Michael Waters also embraced the renewed tenure of Minister Papalia.

“We have greatly appreciated the productive relationship with Minister Papalia over a number of years and we look forward to continuing this relationship over the coming term of Parliament to deliver positive policy outcomes for the WA liquor retail sector,” said Waters.

Peck added that ministerial changes would enable the positive engagement and dialogue between the government and the Association to continue.

“Minister Papalia has always been cognisant of the complexities and challenges associated with the take-away liquor industry across multiple jurisdictions,” said Peck.

Consistency for the industry is key said Peck, with his goal to ensure a productive and positive environment over the next four years for the benefit of all relevant stakeholders.
