Ritchies has announced a major leadership transition, with long-serving Chief Executive Officer Fred Harrison set to step down from the role on 31 December 2026. Wayne Harrison will assume the position of CEO from 1 January 2027, marking a new chapter for one of Australia’s largest independently owned supermarket operators.
Fred Harrison, who has served as CEO since 1994, has overseen more than three decades of significant growth and modernisation at Ritchies. His tenure has been defined by the expansion of the company’s store network, the evolution of its retail operations, and the establishment of substantial community support initiatives.
Under Harrison’s leadership, Ritchies has contributed more than $54m to local communities through its charitable programs.
Today, Ritchies operates more than 82 supermarkets and liquor stores nationwide, employing over 6500 people and generating an annual turnover of approximately $1.5bn. The company’s growth has cemented its status as Australia’s leading independent licensed supermarket operator and one of the country’s largest privately owned businesses.
In a social media post about the change, Ritchies said: “While Fred will step down as CEO, he is not retiring from Ritchies. From 1 January 2027, he will move into a more informal role as Executive Director.
“This role will include supporting Wayne as he transitions into the CEO position, as well as contributing to the ongoing success of Ritchies. Fred will continue with Ritchies on an ongoing basis.
“To prepare for this transition, Wayne will step down from his current role as Victorian State Manager in February 2026 and take on the role of CEO Elect. During this period, Wayne will report directly to Fred and assume the ‘second-in-command’ position, with all positions in Ritchies having a dotted reporting line to him.”
Ritchies said the structured succession plan is designed to maintain the company’s long-standing values, culture, and strategic focus. The leadership transition reinforces the business’s family-oriented ethos and commitment to stability, ensuring consistent direction and growth well into the future.
