The most drinkable and refreshing beers in the world are in the 4.0 to 4.5 per cent ABV range, according to Chuck Hahn, brewmaster at Lion's Malt Shovel Brewery.
Hahn was responding to recent coverage on TheShout of the differing ABV strategies of the two major brewers, with rival Carlton & United Breweries having recently upped the ABV of Victoria Bitter to 4.9 per cent.
"Whilst we have always tried to deliver on real flavour with the [James] Squires range of beers, we have always tried to demonstrate restraint in the per cent ABV," Hahn told TheShout.
"Our fastest growing brand – 150 Lashes Pale Ale – is at 4.2 per cent ABV," he said.
"Some of our Mad Brewers Limited Releases may be higher in alcohol level, but these brews are not designed for easy drinking."
Hahn said the latest James Squire release, the 'Hop Thief Ale', is a limited release in keg only and is at a "reasonable" 5 per cent ABV.
"Our biggest volume seller continues to be the Squires Chancer Golden Ale at 4.5 per cent ABV," he said.
"The most drinkable and refreshing beers in the world are in the 4.0 to 4.5 per cent ABV level."
With the exception of Hahn Harvest, I would say Chuck knoweth his joobs.
