On Wednesday 7 June, Wynns Coonawarra Estate will launch its annual luxury release, the Wynnsday Collection.
This year’s release is comprised of Wynns Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon, Wynns Black Label ‘Old Vines’ Shiraz, Wynns Glengyle Single Vineyard Cabernet Sauvignon, Wynns V&A Lane Shiraz, and Wynns V&A Lane Cabernet Shiraz.
The two Black Label wines are prime examples of Coonawarra’s cool climate and Terra Rossa soil, according to senior winemaker Sue Hodder.
“Wynnsday 2023 is headlined by the 66th vintage of one of Australia’s most cellared wines, Wynns Black Label Cabernet Sauvignon, and sees the return of Black Label ‘Old Vines’ Shiraz made predominantly from our two oldest vineyards,”
In fact, some of the grapes selected for the ‘Old Vines’ Shiraz came from the Undoolya vineyard, a fragment of the original 1890s planting and Wynn’s oldest vineyard.
The three other wines in the collection hail from V&A Lane, which sits at the middle of Coonawarra’s Terra Rossa strip.
“Our Glengyle Vineyard north of V&A Lane was selected as our single vineyard release in 2007, 2009 and now in 2021. And finally Sarah Pidgeon has made finely-structured, early picked Cabernet and Cabernet Shiraz wines from the Wynns V&A Lane vineyards,” said Hodder.
Hodder, who has been with Wynns for 30 years, expects the 2021 vintage to become one of Coonawarra’s classic vintages.
“The heralded 2021 vintage was similar in many ways to the highly regarded 2010 vintage, where strong coastal Bonnie Upwelling breezes swept across Coonawarra, cooling the region down, and there was low rainfall and no extreme heat or cold. The wines have a noticeable iridescence to their colours and a similar vibrancy and depth of flavour. 2021 is a vintage that we are very proud of and one that will be cellared in Australia and indeed around the world,” she concluded.
Later in the year, the 2020 vintage of Wynns John Riddoch Cabernet Sauvignon will be launched in September. The wine will be distributed through esteemed French marketplace La Place de Bordeaux.
