The Victorian Gambling and Casino Control Commission (VGCCC) has released its resources and supporter kit to help raise the profile of Gambling Harm Awareness Week (GHAW), taking place from 18 to 24 November.

GHAW is designed to help venues and organisations engage with the community about the effects of gambling and to help people make informed choices when they gamble. The VGCCC supports organisations by providing a range of resources to use within their community.

There are digital assets, poster, flyers and social media tiles to help promote GHAW throughout community and followers, with the VGCCC saying it also encourages organisations to host an event or group activity to raise awareness of GHAW 2024.

The VGCCC said in its statement about GHAW: “In the past, organisations have held both physical events as well as online. Some event ideas for you to consider are:

  • community information session with a guest speaker, i.e. a gambling harm expert/researcher or person with lived experience of gambling harm.
  • health and wellbeing information session, where information on gambling harm is woven into a broader discussion about overall wellbeing.
  • if you’re a local council or community organisation, invite the local secondary school (senior levels) to get behind Gambling Harm Awareness Week. Run a quiz or competition with students to come up with ideas for their own campaign about gambling harm.
  • if you’re a sporting club, sign up to Love the game, not the odds.

The Commission added: “This year, we’re proud to be leading GHAW from 18 to 24 November. The VGCCC is committed to making GHAW a key part of our efforts to raise awareness about gambling harm.

“We will provide industry and community with a range of resources in the lead up to the week.

“If you would like to attend a GHAW online briefing session, please email contact@vgccc.vic.gov.au.”

More information on GHAW and the Resources and Supporter Kit is available on the VGCCC website.
