A Sydney hotel recently bought and overhauled by the Riversdale Group has opened an art gallery upstairs from the pub.
Glebe’s Toxteth Hotel last week opened The Tate, which will feature a new collection from emerging artists each fortnight, as well as providing studio space to local students.
Created by the team behind Lo-Fi Collective Gallery and The Standard, Go Font Ur Self and Self Est, The Tate is another step aimed at bridging the gap between Sydney's hotels industry and the arts.
Speaking to TheShout, general manager and licensee Richie Haines said the space is bringing the tradition of home-spun talent back to the iconic pub that once served as a meeting place for community and artisans alike.
"The Tate is another project from the Riversdale Group, which aims to inject energy into Sydney's arts scene," he said.
"By providing free studio space to students, and the opportunity to exhibit alongside high profile artists, our aim is to give arts students a leg up and good exposure.
"In addition, the concept is part of our concerted efforts to raise the profile of the Toxteth as an all-round venue, and to engage with the local community."
