The Australian Liquor Stores Association (ALSA) officially opened its 18th annual conference in Perth this morning (Aug 29).
Delegates from all over Australia have been arriving at Burswood Entertainment Complex for a week of business sessions exploring the concept of convenience as king in the retail liquor industry.
Deputy leader for the Opposition, Julie Bishop, opened the conference by acknowledging the retail liquor industry's contribution to the Australian economy and commitment to self-regulation, along with the importance of maintaining personal responsibility in business.
"Australia is rejecting the red tape of the Nanny State and the Liberal government's view is that we need to maintain a balance between intervention and letting people get on with their lives," she said.
Others speakers lined up for the conference's opening day include economic commentator, Peter Switzer, who will host a panel discussion between supplier CEOs on the convenience sector.
Later today delegates will hear from the CEOs of each state and territory's Liquor Stores Association before an afternoon of workshops.
Tonight will see the delegates heading to Indiana's at Cottesloe Beach for a sunset cocktail party.
Tomorrow's sessions include a presentation by Nielsen's Michael Walton, a Q&A session with ALSA's corporate partners and the ALSA Expo and Trade Day.
