The New South Wales Office of Liquor, Gaming & Racing (OLGR) today announced that Paul Newson (pictured), the agency's former director of compliance, is stepping up to become its executive director.

Newson joined OLGR two years ago as the director of compliance and has been acting executive director since December last year.

Prior to joining OLGR he worked with the NSW Independent Pricing and Regulatory Tribunal, Consumer Affairs Victoria, AUSTRAC, and Customs in compliance and enforcement roles.

Newson began his career in the Australian Army and is a graduate of the Australian Defence Force Academy and Royal Military College, Duntroon. He has degrees in Law and Management from the University of NSW and Macquarie University as well as a Bachelor of Arts from the University of NSW.

Minister for Hospitality and Racing, George Souris, welcomed the appointment.

"Paul brings significant skills, knowledge and expertise from a range of senior compliance and enforcement roles and I welcome his appointment to this challenging and important position," Souris said.

"Under Paul's leadership, OLGR is well placed to continue to play a leading role in implementing the NSW Government's range of alcohol measures to improve the safety and amenity of our entertainment precincts and target alcohol-related violence."

Newson's appointment follows the resignation of Elizabeth Tydd who was appointed NSW Information Commissioner late last year.

"I would like to thank Ms Tydd for her dedication and commitment over the four years she held the position of OLGR executive director,” Souris said.
