The annual Eat Drink Design Awards (EDDA) recognise excellence and innovation in the design of restaurants, bars, cafes, hotels, nightclubs, temporary venues and retail spaces across Australia and New Zealand. The awards highlight that an exceptional venue isn’t only defined by the food and beverage it serves, but how the design of the venue itself helps to heighten the experience for patrons.

Four pubs have been shortlisted for the awards, in the categories of Best Bar Design (The Malt Shovel Taphouse, Birtinya; and Hotel Esplanade, St Kilda) and Best Restaurant Design (Alala’s at The Oaks Hotel, Neutral Bay; and The Albert Park Hotel).

Cassie Hansen, editor of Artichoke magazine and a member of this year’s EDDA jury, commented on each of the pub entries below.

The winners of the Eat Drink Design Awards 2020 will be announced on 18 November.
