One of Adelaide’s oldest suburban pubs has reopened

The Preston Hotels group, headed up by director Piers Schmidt, has reopened the Sussex Hotel in Walkerville, Adelaide.

The pub has been situated on the corner of Walkerville Terrace and Stephens Terrace since 1843 and represents a recent acquisition for the group, which also includes the Earl of Leicester Hotel and the Union Hotel.

The Sussex Hotel has undergone a makeover but Schmidt emphasised:

“We are delighted that stage one of the reno is now complete but want to reiterate there is more to come.”

“We are fortunate to be involved with suburban and city hotels, and it is so exciting to see patrons really gravitating back to their local.”

“For us the transformation is about keeping it local, tasteful and traditional.”

The Sussex Hotel is one of just a handful of art deco pubs in South Australia and the renovation sought to highlight the original art deco design.

Schmidt said: “The renos have included an external facelift, thanks to a lick of new paint colour on the original façade, and the front bar has also been dealt a design makeover.”

The redesigned front bar has been enriched with a range of new craft beer and wine selection, with a new line up of entertainment also announced.

The Sussex Hotel dining menu showcases local ingredients, classic pub favourites with a new pizza oven also on the way.

There is a new team of chefs and the focus is on pub classics.

The pub now showcases DJs on Fridays and Saturdays and karaoke and quiz nights will launch shortly.

Schmidt confirmed the overall revamp will be completed in stages, saying: “There are more changes to come to enhance the design, food and experience for locals.”
