The Edinburgh Castle in Adelaide brought ‘to its knees’ by nearby construction
Reputedly South Australia’s oldest pub, The Edinburgh Castle in Adelaide, has reportedly closed due to nearby construction work taking place.
David Penberthy told Adelaide radioFIVEaa Breakfast during Tuesday’s Breaking @ 8 segment:
“The Ed was chugging along nicely… it’s actually been there since 1837. It’s got the oldest trading license in Adelaide.
“But the pub has been on its knees because of the flow on effect from the construction of an $80 million, 772 bed, student accommodation complex in neighbouring Gray St.
“Today we can report the very sad news that the Edinburgh castle has closed its doors.
“It’s gone out of business and the reason it’s gone out of business is that for months now it’s resembled a war zone… they haven’t even been able to get the beer trucks in to get the kegs into the pub.”
The pub had posted a number of times to its Facebook page regarding the issues they were experiencing, saying on 17 August:
“Apologies to our suppliers, bands wanting to get equipment in and our customers. Access to the hotel and our ability to receive deliveries is still severely compromised.”
The Edinburgh Castle has been contacted for comment about the reported closure.
