Australian wine has once again shone on the global stage, bringing home 10 trophies from this year’s International Wine and Spirits Competition (IWSC), more than any other country.

Margaret River winery Xanadu’s 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon scored 98 points, which was the joint-highest score at the competition. Of more than 12,000 wines tasted worldwide, only three received a score of 98 points. Xanadu’s 2023 Cabernet Sauvignon is the only still, dry wine to achieve this distinction.

Brand Manager Chris Holland said: “At Xanadu, it’s the distinct energy of Margaret River that we capture in every bottle. A vibrancy that echoes from the region, through the vineyard, and into our wines. Every Xanadu wine is an invitation to experience the pulse of Margaret River, to discover what makes our place so special.”

It was an incredible year for Magaret River with all but one of Australia’s trophy-winning wines coming from the region. This year’s Australian trophy-winning wines are:

  • Amato Vino Savagnin ‘Space Girls’ 2024
  • Aravina Estate Stella Bdx 2022
  • Deep Woods Estate Reserve Chardonnay 2023
  • Deep Woods Estate Reserve Chardonnay 2024
  • Happs Three Hills Chardonnay 2023
  • Morris Wines Cellar Reserve Grand Muscat NV
  • Nocturne SV Forrest Chardonnay 2024
  • Peccavi Estate ‘The Estate’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2022
  • Snake and Herring Cannonball Cabernet Sauvignon 2023
  • Xanadu Wines Cabernet Sauvignon 2023

Margaret River Wine Association CEO, Amanda Whiteland, said recognition from one of the world’s most prestigious international wine competitions was a fantastic result for the region.

“These results not only reflect the outstanding quality of the recent vintages, but also highlights the region’s long-term trajectory of excellence. Margaret River wines have never been more exciting,” she said.

IWSC CEO, Christelle Guibert, added: “The exceptional medal results demonstrate how Western Australia continues to deliver world-class wines that resonate with global audiences.”

In its notes about the trophy winning wines, the IWSC said: “Cabernet Sauvignon once again proved its class on the world stage. Peccavi Estate’s ‘The Estate’ Cabernet Sauvignon 2022 from Margaret River was named one of the this year’s outstanding reds, joined by fellow Western Australian producer Xanadu Wines with its Cabernet Sauvignon 2023.

“Snake and Herring also impressed with its Cannonball Cabernet Sauvignon 2023, further cementing the region’s reputation for producing world-class expressions of the variety. Even more proof of Margaret Rivers enduring appealing can be found in Happs Three Hills Chardonnay 2023 which was also awarded a trophy.”
