Orders for the Hear Me Roar Gin from Australian Women in Wine Awards (AWIWA) close at the end of this month, so order now to help assist women in the wine industry.
This gin has been produced by Rebekah (Beck) Richardson, Owner and Distiller at Lucid Distilling, and an esteemed winemaker.
“Having been in the wine Industry for over 25 years I love that I can give back and help support other women coming through,” Richardson says.
“I feel it is our responsibility to do what we can to be the change we want to see. I love the energy that the Australian Women in Wine advisory board brings to this project and I feel fortunate to be surrounded by so many fantastic women who are not only colleagues, but also friends.”
The name is a deliberate reference to the chorus of Australian-born singer Helen Reddy’s 1971 song, ‘I Am Woman’, which became a rallying call for woman across the world.
“The hear me roar project is a great way to lift up the next generation of women in our wine community,” Richardson adds.
Only 30 per cent of professionals in the wine industry are women, while this number drops to less than 10 per cent in senior positions – a considerable gender disparity.
In an instance of distilling democracy, the recipe for the gin was determined by a vote, after women across the industry were asked to suggest what ingredients should be included. The winning entry came from Tracy Taylor of Tasmania’s Southwood Vineyards, with the gin infused with her suggestion of blackcurrant leaf, native finger lime and Tasmanian pepperberry.
The spirit was entirely funded by industry donations, with contributors and services provided including:
- Denomination Design – label design
- CCL – labels
- Tarac – base spirit
- Saverglass – bottles
- Closure Pak – stoppers
- Brand Warrior – marketing
- Kaddy – postage and shipping
- Calabria – venue
- Lucid Distilling – distillation and sponsorship
The gin is currently available via the AWIWA website with 100 per cent of profits going to assist women in the wine industry.
