Bird in Hand has expanded its official AFL and AFLW wine partnership with the Sydney Swans, releasing special edition cases of the 2016 Nest Egg Cabernet Sauvignon to mark the club’s 150th anniversary.
Limited to 150 cases, the six-bottle collection is individually numbered and features pivotal moments from the Swans’ legacy, starting with the club’s 1874 founding. Bird in Hand has recently been renewed as the official wine sponsor of the Sydney Swans’ AFL and AFLW teams for the 2025 season.
Andrew Nugent, co-founder of Bird in Hand, is excited to announced the release.
“We are proud to present these limited-edition wines in collaboration with the Sydney Swans. The sets unite iconic moments from the club’s 150-year journey with one of our exclusive wines from the pinnacle Nest Egg collection,” he said.
The collection will celebrate milestones such as the founding of the South Melbourne Football Club in 1874; when the club transitioned from South Melbourne to the Sydney Swans in 1982; the unforgettable 2005 Grand Final victory, which ended a 72-year premiership drought; the 2012 Grand Final win; the first Sydney Swans AFLW game in 2022; and the club’s 2024 centenary year.
The 2016 Nest Egg Cabernet Sauvignon is made from grapes picked during a very dry spring and warm summer, which was the earliest start to vintage on record. Barrels were matured for 28 months to ensure tannins were fully integrated, and the final blend included 50 per cent New French Oak barriques, with the remaining 50 per cent matured in first and second fill French Oak. All of these barrels were individually tasted and the most exceptional barrels were selected for use in Nest Egg. Made in limited quantities, this vintage only comprises 11 barrels. The 2016 Nest Egg Cabernet Sauvignon has a cellar potential of more than 15 years.
The collection is priced at $900 per case, and us available to purchase on the Bird in Hand website.
