BoozeBud has sought to consolidate its position as a leading online liquor retailer, with the acquisition of established wine e-commerce retailer, Get Wines Direct.
Boozebud, founded in 2014, said in a statement to press that the merger with Get Wines Direct will create a business with over 200,000 active customers.
CEO and Co-Founder of BoozeBud, Alex Gale, believes the purchase will be mutually beneficial, saying: “Get Wines Direct has an exceptional team that has built a business with a well established customer base and a broad set of retail capabilities.
“BoozeBud will benefit from bringing Get Wines Direct knowledge and experience into its business, and Get Wines will benefit from BoozeBud’s digital, marketing, and operational strengths.”
Similarly, John Harris, the Head of Get Wines Direct says: “Get Wines Direct have been looking to align with another like-minded online retailer to form one of the country’s largest online liquor retailers.
“BoozeBud was selected due to their like-minded values and ambitions to grow at a rapid rate and become a significant disruptive force in the liquor space. Our combined strengths provide the best level of synergies to ensure we are successful in these ambitions”.
Both businesses will operate separately, with management teams and employees remaining unchanged.
The purchase is something of a coup for BoozeBud (sold to founders by Asahi in December 2020), with Get Wines Direct one of Australia’s early online liquor retail success stories. Established in 2001, the company has now sold over 40 million bottles of wine in two decades in the industry.
Boozebud harbour ambitions to become Australia’s foremost ‘pure-play’ online liquor retailer, and stated it will “continue to explore further acquisition opportunities” into the future.
