The cancellation of an international event to be held in Western Australia is a huge mistake, according to the Australian Hotels Association (AHA).

The Red Bull Air Race was successfully held in Perth in April this year, and was set to return in 2011, however Red Bull organisers have cancelled their scheduled events worldwide.

AHA (WA) CEO, Bradley Woods, said the cancellation has left the tourism sector, including the hotel industry, wondering what events have been developed to fill the void.

“The effect of this major event’s loss to the State could not have come at a worse time for the tourism industry and no amount of sugar-coating will hide the fact that WA is left exposed with no major international events,” Woods said.

The event was predicted to generate up to $20 million for the state.
