For the first time, AFL and NRL coaches have joined forces to encourage fans to moderate their drinking and show respect during this year’s finals series.
Penrith Panthers’ coach Ivan Cleary and Hawthorn Hawks’ coach Sam Mitchell are fronting the DrinkWise campaign designed to reinforce positive behaviour.
New DrinkWise research shows that more than half of fans intend to drink during the finals, with 54 per cent of AFL fans and 52 per cent of NRL fans saying they intend to consume alcohol during their respective grand finals.
The study also found 80 per cent of fans support stadiums and clubs offering zero and low-alcohol options, while 61 per cent believe spectator behaviour has become more respectful in recent years.
It also showed 85 per cent of respondents said they do not feel pressured to drink at major sporting events such as the AFL and NRL finals.
DrinkWise CEO, Simon Strahan, said the partnership with coaches was designed to reinforce positive behaviour.
“Bringing together two AFL and NRL finals coaches for this campaign showcases the importance of this message,” Strahan said.
“Coaches like Ivan and Sam influence behaviour on and off the field, setting the tone for players and fans.
“As excitement builds, these coaches remind us that passion and respect go hand in hand.”
Strahan said DrinkWise was also working with both sporting codes, support services, government and law enforcement to reinforce a united approach to responsible consumption.
Panthers’ Coach Ivan Cleary said the finals period was one of the highlights of the sporting year but fans needed to keep celebrations safe.
“We just want to make sure that excitement doesn’t spill over into behaviour that spoils the occasion,” he said.
Hawks’ Coach Sam Mitchell shared a similar sentiment, saying the campaign means encouraging fans to respect themselves and those around them by making smart choices if choosing to drink alcohol.
“As fans and players, our actions off the field shape the culture we all want to be part of,” he said.
“The message is simple: if you choose to drink during the finals, do it in moderation and look after everyone around you.”
