Fine wine merchant Langtons will launch an online-only Champagne auction tomorrow, striving to break the record for the largest single-region auction in its history.

Champagne: Auctioning the World’s Finest, launched in partnership with Champagne expert and writer Tyson Stelzer, will host a line-up of rare and hard-to-find cuvées and wines from cult Champagne producers, including back-vintage releases, low-dosage, 750ml and double magnum bottles.

The current record for Langton’s largest Champagne auction is the famed Danny Younis Collection which achieved a total value of $210,951 in sales in September 2023, and the merchant is hoping to double the current record.

Standout wines from the selection include the Salon Le Mesnil Blanc de Blancs 1971 magnum, which is expected to attract bids up to $12,000, and the Moet & Chandon Dom Perignon Brut Karl Lagerfield Edition 1998, expected to bring in between $8000 and $10,000.

Langtons Head of Auctions and Secondary Market, Michael Anderson, says: “There’s no doubt Australians have always had an affinity for Champagne but we’ve seen this desire grow exponentially across the last decade so we are excited to feed this appetite with the largest ever Champagne-dedicated auction.

“Avid collectors will be able to bid on rare and exclusive Champagnes that will add a new depth to any growing collection or make an unrivalled start to a new one.”

Following the success of Sotheby’s The Ultimate Champagne auction held in Paris in June, in which more than half of the lots exceeded pre-sale high estimates, Langtons hopes to replicate a similar success in the Australian market.

With Champagne imports jumping from 890,000 to 10.5 million between 2001 and 2022, demand in the Australian market continues to grow, representing the sixth largest Champagne market by both volume and value globally.

Champagne: Auctioning the World’s Finest will take place from Tuesday 26th November until Sunday 8th December at www.langtons.com.au/auctions.
