GABS is inviting Australian breweries to send in their best can design for the 2024 GABS Can Design Awards, presented by Orora, with entries closing on 7 August.
Once entries have closed, GABS will call on Australia’s craft beer fans to vote for their favourite designs in the People’s Choice voting, which will run from 12 to 25 August. The top 10 designs from the People’s Choice voting will then be presented to a panel of experts, who will choose the winner of this year’s GABS Can Design Awards, to be announced on 12 September.
The 2024 GABS Can Design Awards winner will receive the Orora Golden Can trophy, a set of printing plates, and will share in a $5000 prize pool provided by Opal Specialty Packaging. The prize pool will be spread among the top 10 shortlisted designs. The designer behind the winning can will also receive a $1000 prize.
Mike Bray, GABS Managing Director, said that the awards are an opportunity to highlight the creativity of can designers.
“We are so excited to once again be celebrating the amazingly talented designers who bring our fridges and shelves alive with world class can art. This is a fantastic opportunity to showcase the creativity of the marketing teams and introduce brands to a wide audience of beer and art lovers,” he said.
Last year’s Can Design Awards received 155 entries, with the Orora Golden Can Trophy going to Victoria’s Temple Brewing for its beer, Hello, My Name is Amber, which was designed by Raymond Lim from Ray L Creative. The silver medal went to Brick Lane Brewing’s Last Train Home, which was designed by Pete Johnson, while the bronze medal went to Aether Brewing’s All Australian Pale Ale designed by Drapl & Zookeeper, Emma D’Anna and Emery Greer.
Paul Bowker, CEO of Brick Lane, spoke about the design, which used thermochromic inks to reveal a different image when the can was chilled.
“The Last Train Home was a message in a bottle if you will, or a secret message on the can. When the delicious but terrifying beer is cooled, the thermochromic inks revealed more zombies on the platform for the Last Train Home. The images revealed at the temperature when the beer should not be drunk, when it is so cold that it would stymie the heady aromas of the oud wood on which it is based,” he said.
