Metcash has announced the appointment of two non-executive directors, effective 1 August, following the decision of two previous non-executive directors to step down at the company’s AGM next month.
Peter Birtles and Wai Tang will join Metcash, replacing Fiona Balfour who decided not to stand for re-election and Anne Brennan who stepped down due to unexpected and unforeseen potential conflicts relating to her other directorships.
Speaking about the appointments in a statement to the ASX, Metcash said: “Mr Birtles has over 30 years’ experience in retail and consumer goods industries, including the last 18 years with Super Retail Group Limited where he was Managing Director and Chief Executive Officer from 2006 to early 2019.
“His executive career also includes extensive experience in accounting and finance having previously held the position of Chief Financial Officer of Super Retail Group Limited, as well as other senior financial roles during his 12 years with The Boots Company in the UK and Australia.”
The company added: “Ms Tang is an experienced company director and currently holds non-executive directorships with Vicinity Limited, JB Hi-Fi Limited and Ovato Limited. She is also a board member of Visit Victoria. Her executive career spans more than 30 years, including previously holding the positions of Managing Director of the confectionary retailer Happy Lab, Group Operations Director of Just Group Limited, Chief Executive Officer of Peter Alexander Sleepwear and General Manager of Business Development for Pacific Brands Limited.”
Speaking about the new appointments, Metcash Chairman Rob Murray, said: “We are delighted to have Peter and Wai join the Board. They bring a high level of relevant skills and experience and we look forward to their contributions. The Board and I warmly welcome them to Metcash.”
Last month Metcash said that Helen Nash would replace Balfour as the group’s Chair of the People and Culture Committee.
