Penfolds has released a new range of wines, named ‘Tribute’ to celebrate its 175 year of winemaking.

The range comprises South Australian wines from the 2016 and 2017 vintage, created to pay homage four Penfolds ‘legends’: Founders Mary and Dr Christopher Penfold, Chemist Ray Beckwith and Grange creator Max Schubert.

Speaking about the reasons behind the new range, Penfolds said: “For 175 years, a team of passionate and dedicated craftsmen and women, winemakers, viticulturists and cellar hands have been credited for making Penfolds wines. It is a team effort and recognised as such.

“However, with the 175th anniversary Penfolds wanted to dedicate a range of wines to those that changed our course of direction and wrote our history books.”

The range includes:

The Esteemed Creator, 2016 Barossa Valley Shiraz Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon, RRP $500. A tribute to Chief Winemaker Max Schubert (1948 – 1975): “This wine is a quintessential Australian blend and a celebration of the pioneering winemaking style Max created. Two of Australia’s most profound regional and varietal alignments blend to make an age worthy wine which exudes Penfolds ‘House Style’.”

The Noble Explorer, 2017 South Australian Shiraz, RRP $40. A tribute to Dr. Christopher Rawson Penfold: “This full-bodied wine, with its ripe fruit aromas, voluminous richness and subtle oak spice.”

The Commander In Chief, 2017 South Australian Shiraz Cabernet, RRP $40. A tribute to Mary Penfold: “Opulent red Shiraz fruits are supported by the fine structural Cabernet Sauvignon tannins. All beautifully captured in this classic Penfolds multi-regional blend.”

The Creative Genius, 2017 South Australian Cabernet Sauvignon, RRP $40. A tribute to Dr Ray Beckwith: “This wine bears all the hallmarks of Cabernet Sauvignon, with classic savoury notes supported by well-handled oak and supple tannins.”

The range is available now for select fine wine stores.
