Overstory, the owner of the Tamar Valley wine brand Small Wonder, has announced the acquisition of a 24-hectare vineyard in Tasmania’s acclaimed Coal River Valley, just a 20-minute drive from Hobart.

This strategic move is set to significantly expand the company’s footprint in one of Tasmania’s most prestigious cool-climate wine regions.

The acquisition of the Marengo Road vineyard comes on the heels of the recent opening of Overstory’s state-of-the-art winery in January 2024, and marks a pivotal moment in the company’s growth.

With plans to double production capacity in Tasmania over the next three years, Overstory aims to expand its wine portfolio and increase its presence in both domestic and international markets.

“We are thrilled to broaden our presence in Tasmania and take this next step in enhancing the quality and variety of our wine offerings,” said Paul McArdle, CEO of Overstory. “As with our Tamar Valley location, we are committed to obtaining organic certification for the Coal River Valley vineyard within the next three years, continuing our focus on sustainable, high-quality winemaking practices.”

The newly acquired vineyard, which was planted between 2017 and 2019, boasts a mix of cool-climate varietals, primarily Pinot Noir and Chardonnay, alongside smaller plantings of Shiraz, Riesling, Pinot Gris, and Viognier.

This acquisition reinforces Overstory’s position as one of Tasmania’s leading producers of cool-climate wines and represents an exciting new chapter for both Overstory and its Small Wonder brand.
