Premium and vintage winemaker St Hugo has announced the relaunch of its Vetus Perum collection with a new release, Vetus Purum Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2015.
Showcasing St Hugo’s distinctive house style, the 2015 vintage reflects the highest quality of winemaking. With just one per cent of the whole Coonawarra Cabernet harvest making the cut, the Vetus Purum Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon 2015 is intended to represent the intricate details of the winemaking journey.
During the winemaking process, Chief Winemaker Peter Munro and his team harvest each row of grapes at a precise time, before individually tasting and selecting a few barrels of the highest quality to make the final cut.
“The wine is not about being the best wine of a vintage, but about being the best wine of the best vintages,” said Munro.
“We harvest the fruit at the height of varietal and regional expression, where purity and elegance combine to produce the best possible Cabernet. We then select the highest quality, three-year-seasoned, fine grained oak barrels to draw out the character during maturation.
“The wine is consistently checked by our winemakers during fermentation and maturation to ensure the best result is achieved.”
With Vetus meaning ‘ancient’ in Latin, and Purum translating to ‘pure’, the collection relaunches this month reflecting on more than 40 years of history and retailing at $220. With every Coonawarra Cabernet Sauvignon from St Hugo having received a gold medal, dating back to the beginning, the team felt it was an obvious choice for the upcoming release of Vetus Purum.
“Thanks to a stellar 2015 vintage, this is St Hugo’s most illustrious release to date and one to place in the cellar for decades to come,” added Munro.
“Unsurprisingly, Vetus Purum sits at top of the table of award-winning wines from our Barossa winery, having received a trophy in 2018 and 2019 at the Limestone Coast Wine Show, among many other recent accolades.”
