Tooheys New, which is the official beer sponsor of the NSW Blues, has unveiled a limited edition can designed by Sydney artist Kentaro Yoshida ahead of next week’s State of Origin.
The new can design features ‘footy-inspired’ illustrations of NSW towns and landmarks, highlighting the long history of Tooheys in the state. Tooheys has been brewing in Sydney since the 1860s.
Chris Allan, Brand Director of Tooheys owner Lion Australia, said that the limited edition can provides a means of connecting with the Blues team, after the celebrations of 2021’s 2-1 series victory were curtailed by lockdown.
“The residents of New South Wales spent most of the State of Origin 2021 season in lockdown, so this year Blues supporters are ready to show up and rally for their team,” Allan said
“Whether they’re watching the game at home or at a mate’s BBQ, The Tooheys New limited edition can is a great way for fans to show solidarity for The Blues team and love for their state.”
Alongside the new can design Tooheys New has worked with Newcastle based punk group and comedians, These New South Whales to create ‘The New Anthem’. This tongue-in-cheek song pays homage to many of the state’s most famous landmarks, including ‘The Big Banana’, while celebrating Tooheys’ connection to the state.
This song will be performed at The Brewery Bar in the Novotel Sydney Olympic Park, ahead of the first game in the series, on June 8.
Tooheys New was the sponsor of the NSW Blues for 13 State of Origin series, including much of the team’s 1990s success. The beer partnered with the Blues again in 2018, and has remained the team’s sponsor ever since.
This limited edition can will be available in liquor stores across NSW.
