On International Women’s Day every year, the voices and stories of women across the world are celebrated, as we address the issues that cause gender inequality and diversity. But despite these issues remaining, such voices and stories take a backseat once the day is done.

We think it’s worth doing the opposite and actively challenging the issues that create these gaps in our industry, which is why we launched our weekly Wednesday Women series, where we profile the stories of the inspiring women in this great and wide industry.

This week, we turn the spotlight on Bronte O’Donoghue, Marketing Manager at Eagle Bay Brewing. Her journey reflects the passion, community, and creativity that make the craft beer world so special. With a clear focus on breaking barriers and creating a more inclusive environment, O’Donoghue is helping to shape the future of the beer industry, one brew at a time.

The power of community in craft beer

For O’Donoghue, the draw to the beer industry came from the strong sense of community that defines the world of craft brewing. From suppliers and trade customers to punters in the local bar, the shared connection between all those involved in the process is what keeps her coming back for more.

“The craft community is really special. Passionate, innovative, curious, and just the best kind of people to get stuck talking to over a couple of beers.”

It’s the people, the shared passion for innovation, and the relationships built through beer that keep O’Donoghue motivated and engaged in the industry.

O’Donoghue is a strong advocate for encouraging more women and non-binary individuals to pursue careers in brewing. She believes that one of the most important steps in achieving greater inclusivity is to platform the work and achievements of women already excelling in the industry.

“You can’t be what you can’t see,” she explains. “Giving women the educational tools, support, and opportunity to grow into senior roles in beer businesses will unlock more opportunities for those coming after them.”

She cites organisations such as the Pink Boots Society, which create networking opportunities and provide the mentorship and guidance that women need to succeed.

Overcoming challenges

Like many women in male-dominated industries, O’Donoghue has faced her fair share of challenges. One of the most persistent issues she has encountered is having her voice heard, particularly in situations where direct confrontation isn’t her style. She highlights the importance of setting clear boundaries early on in her career to ensure that her needs and expectations are understood.

“Be really clear and specific about what you need from your coworkers from the get-go,” O’Donoghue says.

“Don’t be afraid to ask for advice or feedback from other women in the industry. They’ve already fought and learned from battles, so you don’t have to.”

She also stresses the importance of fostering open communication within the workplace.

“Work with your HR Manager to foster a culture of open communication,” she says. “If your business doesn’t have an HR Manager, ask your General Manager or Director about attending leadership or communications training.”

O’Donoghue credits her own career development to the Pink Boots Society’s scholarships, which helped her gain access to important training and career growth opportunities.

For women considering a career in the beer industry, O’Donoghue’s advice is simple: “Go for it!” She encourages women to dive into the industry without hesitation, noting that it’s a dynamic and exciting field with plenty of opportunities for growth and success.

The creative joy of new product development

One of the aspects O’Donoghue loves most about her role is the opportunity to work on the entire creative process, from concept to execution.

“Discussing a beer as a concept and then bringing it to life through branding, packaging, festivals, and sales activations is so satisfying,” she says. “It’s incredibly rewarding to work throughout the entire new product development chain with creative and like-minded people who share the same goals.”

For O’Donoghue, the satisfaction lies not only in the final product but in the collaboration that makes it all possible.

Building a more inclusive future for brewing

As the beer industry continues to evolve, O’Donoghue remains committed to fostering an inclusive environment where women, non-binary individuals, and people from all backgrounds feel welcomed and supported. Her journey serves as a reminder that the craft beer industry is about more than just brewing – it’s about creating meaningful connections and opening doors for future generations of brewers, marketers, and innovators.

O’Donoghue’s story is a powerful example of how passion, creativity, and the drive to break down barriers can lead to success in the beer industry. Through her work at Eagle Bay Brewing and her advocacy for women in the industry, she is helping to ensure that the future of craft beer is as diverse and inclusive as the community it serves.
