On International Women’s Day every year, the voices and stories of women across the world are celebrated, as we address the issues that cause gender inequality and diversity. But despite these issues remaining, such voices and stories take a backseat once the day is done.
We think it’s worth doing the opposite and actively challenging the issues that create these gaps in our industry. So, we’ve launched this weekly series, Wednesday Women, where we’ll profile the stories of the inspiring women in this great and wide industry.
Today we speak with Katherine Brown, who spent eight years as a winemaker at Brown Brothers before transitioning to the role of Luxury Portfolio Manager for Brown Family Wine Group in 2021, which she says offers a unique perspective and lets her explore the business from a new angle.
Overseeing exceptional Australian brands like Brown Brothers Patricia, Pirie Sparkling and Tamar Ridge, Brown says: “I get to travel to the beautiful regions of Tasmania and the King Valley wine regions, connecting with wine lovers and sharing the stories behind each bottle. From the heritage of Brown Brothers Patricia to the elegance of Pirie Sparkling and Tamar Ridge, I’m passionate about creating unforgettable experiences and celebrating the artistry of winemaking.
“I’m particularly excited about hosting consumer events that introduce new audiences to wine, and I can’t wait to roll these out. It’s a great opportunity to engage new wine lovers and share the exceptional wines from Tasmania and Victoria, offering them an unforgettable experience with our premium offerings.”
Though consumers may be drinking less, they’re increasingly willing to invest in high-quality wines, says Brown, and the future of luxury wines in Australia looks incredibly promising.
“Especially with regions like Tasmania and the King Valley, Victoria, leading the charge,” she explains. “Tasmania’s cool climate is perfect for producing elegant, world-class sparkling wines, while its Pinot Noir and Chardonnay are gaining international acclaim. Meanwhile, the King Valley, known for its Italian varietals, is creating distinctive, premium wines with a unique regional character.
“Both regions are focusing on sustainable practices and innovation, ensuring their place at the forefront of the global luxury wine scene. With growing interest and recognition, these areas will continue to shape Australia’s luxury wine future.”
Not only is sustainability a concern for Australia’s winemakers, it’s increasingly shaping the future of the wine industry and this shift is about more than meeting expectations – it’s a strategic move to ensure the longevity of the land, the environment and the industry.
“Sustainability is a core focus for both our industry and company. We’re committed to producing wine for generations to come by adopting responsible practices in viticulture, winemaking, and packaging,” Brown explains.
“It’s essential to continually evolve to meet consumer demands while maintaining our relevance. By prioritising sustainability, we ensure the long-term health of our vineyards and the environment, all while delivering wines that align with the values of today’s conscious consumers.”
A family legacy
Being part of the fourth generation of the Brown Family Wine Group, which has more than 130 years heritage as a family business, Brown says her family has deeply shaped her passion and her drive to create a bright future for Australian wine.
“The most rewarding part of being in a family wine business is creating a product that brings people together for fun and great conversations. I’m fortunate to work alongside my sisters and cousins daily, and there’s an incredible energy knowing that the work we do today helps shape the future of the business and its legacy.
“My passion is evident in everything I do, and I feel incredibly fortunate to have been born into such a remarkable industry. Every day, I’m motivated to continue our family’s legacy, working towards excellence and contributing to the growth and success of Australian wine on the global stage and hopefully pass this passion on to the next generation,” she told The Shout.
Throughout her career Brown has been inspired by many incredible women both in her family and in the broader industry, but one that stands out is Cate Looney, Senior Winemaker at Brown Family Wine Group.
“Her exceptional winemaking knowledge and refined tasting palate are truly remarkable. Cate’s dedication and expertise have earned her numerous accolades, including the Winemaker of the year in 2020 and her 2018 Brown Brothers Patricia Sparkling, awarded Best Sparkling Wine in Halliday’s 2025 Wine Review. Her success continues to inspire me and others in the industry, showcasing the impact women can have in winemaking,” Brown stated.
