Small bar group House of Pocket has opened its latest Sydney venue, Kasippu, which combines Sri Lankan curry, cocktails, live music, karaoke and Hydralyte slushies under the roof of a heritage building.
The Sri Lankan curry house, or ‘Wadiya’ is at the heart – and the front – of Kasippu, with Head Chef Amila Hemchandra serving up authentic Sri Lankan dishes.
Chef Amila recently took the team on a flavour-packed journey to his homeland, inspiring the venue’s offerings. “When we were discussing the new venue concept, I invited Karl to join me in Sri Lanka to experience everything — from high-end restaurants to our village cuisine. It was while sitting by the lake, eating curry, sipping Kasippu, and singing a bit of karaoke that the idea for the venue was born,” said Amila.
After stepping through the curry house, guests will find themselves in the intimate surroundings of Kasippu’s bar, which again brings a Sri Lankan influence to its contemporary mixology.
In Sri Lanka Kasippu is illicit alcohol or moonshine and that philosophy of homemade drinks is an integral part of Kasippu’s drinks offering, with almost all syrups, cordials, and tinctures being housemade.
The cocktail menu is another tribute to the island nation, with ingredients and techniques that bring a new depth to classic drinks, ensuring every sip is as memorable as the dishes served out front.
House of Pocket CEO, Karl Schlothauer said of Kasippu: “Late-night food: While the venue is open, we will always be serving our full menu. A personal favourite of mine is the Pepper Beef Curry Kebab, washed down with free Hydralyte slushie with a spot of Karaoke.”
As well as having karaoke night the venue will be also hosting series of local musicians and DJ’s over the coming weekends.
