The Australian Subscription Television and Radio Association (ASTRA) has announced the commencement of the consultation period on the new draft provisions of the Subscription Television Broadcasting and Narrowcasting Codes of Practice relating to gambling advertising during live sports coverage.

The consultation comes as the new provisions were drafted following the Government’s policy decision which was announced in May 2017. That announcement saw the Government call for new restrictions on gambling adverts during live sports coverage.

ASTRA Chair Peter Tonagh said: “ASTRA is committed to working with Government to ensure the new Code restrictions meet the Government’s policy intent and provide appropriate community safeguards.

“The new restrictions will provide additional protections at times when children are likely to be watching. Existing restrictions will continue to apply at all other times.”

The draft gambling provisions of the Code are open for public comment until 22 December 2017.

They must be approved by the Australian Communications and Media Authority before they come into effect in March 2018.

Full details on the provisions of the consultation and how to comment are available on the ASTRA website.
