A number of Australian wineries exhibiting at ProWein 2011 including Peter Lehmann, Langmeil and Brown Brothers have highlighted red wines as the most popular among European buyers.

Peter Lehmann Wines/Hess Family Estates general manager Hans Astrom said two red wines that were brought to the show to trial were the most popular from the entire range of wines at the show.

The first wine, a 2009 Eden Valley Shiraz, was given a code name – 'Wine By The Glass' – while the second was a single vineyard Barosssa wine called Moppa Shiraz. Astrom noted he received substantial interest from Eastern Europe including Poland, Romania and Hungary.

Brown Brothers sales and marketing director for Europe, Gail Gilbert, said the most popular wine at the event was the new Cienna Rosso sparkling red wine which has followed the popularity of the Zibibo Rosa.

Langmeil chief executive officer, Amy Heinicke, said her sparkling shiraz was 'a surprise hit' with European buyers including those from Ireland, Holland, Norway, Sweden, Finland, Bulgaria, France and Germany.
