Ten of the best new Australian wineries have been declared in wine writer James Halliday’s recently released Australian Wine Companion 2009.

Almost half of the list represents operations in the Barossa Valley, while Victoria and Margaret River are also covered.
Among the top ten from the Barossa Valley in South Australia are First Drop Wines, Rohrlach Family Wines, Russell Wines and Yelland & Papps.

Proving the strength of South Australia was the inclusion of The Old Faithful Estate from McLaren Vale, SA.
Other new wineries that feature in this year’s coveted list include Allies Wines from the Mornington Peninsula, Chapman Grove Wines from Margaret River, Larry Churubino Wines in south-west Australia and The Story Wines from the Grampians.

James Halliday’s Australian Wine Companion 2009 is published by Hardie Grant and available for $39.95.
