Recognising the rise in popularity of craft beer, a Melbourne company has developed an app to attract drinkers to venues and breweries.

The Free Beer app entitles the bearer to one free beer per day from one of the participating venues, with a seven day waiting period before obtaining another beer from the same location again, encouraging users to move around.

A 'near me' function on the app shows the user their closest venues, listing the contact details, address and displaying a map to help get there.

The venue decides whether to give away its cheapest beer or something a little better, potentially attracting patrons on quieter nights for a few beverages, with the first one on the house.

“It’s a simple and cheap way for small operators, pubs and bars to get people through their doors,” said Chris Gillard, creative director and co-CEO of developer ProjectProject.

The creators of the app are looking to encourage venues to try the idea, offering free listings to the first 200 takers.

The app will be free to download for the first 24 hours and $1.99 thereon. It will be available for both Apple and Android devices.
