Drinks giant Diageo has expressed its support at Lion's decision to include nutritional information panels (NIPs) on its beer bottles.

In a statement Diageo Australia’s corporate relations and legal director, Kylie McPherson said: "We applaud Lion for taking the initiative to include nutritional information on its products.

"In Australia, Diageo currently provides nutritional information on the majority of its Ready To Drink and Ready To Serve formats and has done so since 2008.

"We are in the process of rolling out nutritional information on all of our products, as announced globally by Diageo in March this year.

"We know that consumers are increasingly discerning about what's in their glass. This proactive move from industry will help consumers make informed decisions about what and how they choose to drink."

Lion announced today that it would add nutrional information panels to its beer, in a move that managing director James Brindley told TheShout was "the right thing to do."

Brindley also said: "Beer is the first step but we will be putting NIPs onto all of our products."
