Hawke’s Brewing Co. has produced its third ‘Legend IPA’ beer, with a dollar from every can funding mangrove protection and conservation in Queensland.

The beer has been produced in tribute to the brewery’s namesake, Bob Hawke, as Landcare Australia was established by the Hawke Government in 1989.

Hawke Brewing Co-Founder, Nathan Lennon, said, “Every year we have a unique opportunity to honour Bob’s legacy with a limited release called Legend IPA.”

“This year, we’re reinforcing our ‘Every Sip Gives Back’ promise to Landcare Australia, with $1 from every can sold being provided to fund equipment for the Communities Enhancing Tidal Wetlands project in Queensland, a state that Bob loved and fiercely defended on the environmental front, from saving the Heritage-listed Daintree Rainforest from the logging industry, to expanding the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park.”

The 2022 batch of Legend IPA will be the first to be brewed at Hawke’s Brewing’s newly opened facilities in Marrickville, and also the first time that the release has been made available in cans, rather than just kegs.

Sales of the beer will help provide equipment to the Cairns and Far North Environment Centre, and training to upskill volunteers, Indigenous Rangers groups and Landcare groups, alongside projects to increase the capacity of the ‘citizen-science’ groups.

Alex Sinchak, Projects and Events Coordinator, Cairns and Far North Environment Centre, was on-hand to explain how the money raised will benefit the ecology of Queensland.

“Thanks to the support of Hawke’s Brewing and Landcare Australia, we will develop and resource community-led, on-the-ground action to address natural and human pressures, such as litter removal from mangroves and increase habitat value with social, cultural, and economic benefits to the Wet Tropics,” Sinchak said.

“Mangroves play an incredibly important role in protecting the Great Barrier Reef Marine Park by serving as a coastal break for natural disasters, reducing nutrient runoff from urban and agricultural sectors, and providing critical habitat for migratory birds and fish of cultural and economic importance.”

The beer itself has been brewed with a combination of Amarillo and Eclipse hops, alongside Victorian farm malt from Tungamah. Legend IPA 2022 clocks in at 6.5 per cent ABV and is said to have notes of ‘citrus and pine… with a wallop of back-end bitterness.’

Hawke’s Legend IPA is available in select independent bottleshops in NSW, ACT and SE QLD, as well as select Dan Murphy’s outlets in NSW and ACT. Retail price is $19.99 per pack of four, or $89.99 per carton of 24.

The beer will also be available in the on-premise, with Hawke’s Brewing providing a map of participating venues and retailers here.
