An Australian Olympian lost his gold medal at a Melbourne nightclub last week.

Nathan Wilmot, who won gold in a sailing event at the Beijing Games in August, reported losing his medal at the Odeon Nightclub at Crown Entertainment Complex on November 4.

News Limited reported patrons saw Wilmot passing the medal around the club, where he was enjoying a few drinks with friends following on the eve of the Melbourne Cup.

Melbourne Police have said they are treating the incident as a lost item and will not investigate the matter further at this time.

“Originally it looked like it had been stolen, but further investigations have revealed it was lost,” a police spokesperson said.

Wilmot will appear on a TV current affairs show this week to appeal for the return of his medal, with his manager Max Markson offering a $5000 reward.
