A new bottle crushing system that reduces waste by 80 per cent is being tried by a number of venues, including the Coogee Bay Hotel and Crown Hotel in Sydney.

Coogee Bay Hotel, assistant general manager, Tony Williams, said the machine had proved so successful they ordered an extra machine for their new Sports Bar.

“I would recommend the Bottlecycler to any establishment, especially those with a high packaged product turnover,” Williams said. “The staff find it easy to use and as it compacts the equivalent of around three wheelie bins worth of empty bottles, they are not emptying bins as frequently. As a result, there has been an increase in productivity and a decrease in OH&S liability.”

The Crown Hotel general manager, Peter Braithwaite, said the machine had saved them storage space.

“We have a very small garbage room and before, there would be buckets and buckets of bottles everywhere, but now we have much more space and it’s great for OH&S,” Braithwaite said.

Bottlecycler director, Hendrik van Ryan, whose company manufacturers the device, explained bottles are fed directly into the machine and crushed into recyclable pieces.

“Bottlecycler offers a reliable and genuine solution to tackling space, noise, recycling and Occupational Health and Safety issues, with major benefits for all parties involved,” Van Ryan said.
