By Clyde Mooney – editor Australian Hotelier

Third-generation hotelier and lifetime industry devotee Cyril Maloney passed away on the weekend aged 93 years.

The hotel industry is mourning this week, with tributes flowing for the man universally described as “one of the gentlemen of hotels”.

“Cyril Maloney was not only an industry stalwart, but also one of life’s true gentlemen,” said AHA NSW President Scott Leach.

“He was an essential piece of the AHA family. Many AHA Presidents past and present have relied on Cyril’s common-sense counsel in dealing with the challenges facing our industry.”

A life member and Hall of Fame inductee of the Australian Hotels Association (AHA) as well as a life member of the ‘Kangaroo Club’ and founding member of the 50-year-old ’15 Club’, Maloney was still very active in pub affairs.

He passed on Saturday amid planning the seating arrangement for his instalment of the 15 Club lunches, which was scheduled to occur yesterday.

Current 15 Club member and owner of Sydney’s Harold Park Hotel, William Ryan, told TheShout he is really taken aback, having last seen Cyril just last week.

“We are incredibly sad to have lost Cyril… our captain – a pioneer and a gentleman, and my personal mentor,” said Ryan.

“He ran hotels across the State and always had industry’s and the community’s greater good at heart.”

Having begun his career in Orange, Maloney formed the Maloney Hotel Group, which currently operates Sydney’s Maloney’s Hotel, Sanctuary Hotel, Shark Hotel, St James Hotel and Star Bar, as well as the Clock Hotel in Surfers Paradise.

A funeral service will be held Friday, 30 August 2013 at 10.30am, at St Mary Magdalene Catholic Church, 835 New South Head Road, Rose Bay. All are welcome.

Cyril Maloney is survived by his wife Margaret – an industry figure in her own right and still the licensee at Randwick’s Royal Hotel – and son Kim, who is the current vice-president of the AHA NSW.

He was the much loved father of Kerrin, Kim, Karel and Kristine (dec.), adored grandfather of Kathleen, Desmond, Matthew, Xander, Mitchell, Max, Megan, Monica, Sarah and Ryan, and great-grandfather to Harrison.
