Wine professionals and enthusiasts in Sydney are being invited to enroll in sommelier programs and examinations run by the UK-based Court of Master Sommeliers.

Led by Darius Allyn and Tim Gaiser from the US and Brian Julyan from the UK, the program consists of a two-day introduction course and examination as well as an advanced Certified Sommelier Examination.

The courses are the first two levels of the four necessary to become a master sommelier — the ultimate professional credential worldwide for sommeliers. There are 145 master sommeliers working in the world. Two are Australian but neither master is currently based in the country.

The introductory course and examination will take place in Sydney this weekend (August 30 and 31) at the Sofitel Wentworth in Sydney. Placements are $500.

The Certified Sommelier Examination will be held on Monday (September 1) and placements are $400.
